Stained Glass Restoration | What to Expect

Stained glass windows come in an array of shapes and styles. Likewise, they also deteriorate in different ways depending on their location and numerous other variables. As such, there’s no single approach to restoring them.

  • At Visions in Glass, we start your restoration as a blank canvas. A member of our team visits your property to assess the damage to your window.

  • With the information collated during this inspection, we draw up a bespoke plan designed to return your installation back to its former glory.

  • Upon agreement with this plan, we return to your site to access the damaged panel(s).

  • It’s important to note, if there’s only a small amount of damage, we strive to carry out repairs in situ.

However, if the panels have lead damage, split solder joints or they’re noticeably bowing, we will need to remove the panel and transport it to our workshop for a full stained glass restoration. In such cases, we secure your property by either installing temporary glazing or boarding up the opening for the duration of our work..

Our team remakes the panel using as much of the original glass as possible. If we need to replace any individual panels, we take the time to find as accurate a match as possible. We have access to an extensive range of salvaged panels. This collection includes discontinued glass such as Flemish and Hammered glass, as well as most colours used in period stained glass panels.

Stained glass restoration also involves reglazing and strengthening with traditional saddle bars. If needed, Visions in Glass can also apply laminated or toughened glass to the back of your panel, or encapsulate it into a sealed unit, to ensure it lasts for many more years to come.

Whether you need to restore a single piece of glass or an entire window, we can help. Through a combination of patience, meticulous attention to detail and time-served techniques, we restore your window’s original beauty.

For your peace of mind, we manage every aspect of your service, including the removal, restoration and reinstallation.

Common Signs of Deterioration

Some signs of damage to your stained glass window are impossible to miss. For example, cracked and shattered glass panels make themselves known quickly. However, glass is virtually immune to natural deterioration; so while the damage could be the result of an impact, it may also be a symptom of a long-standing structural issue.

The most common threat to your installation, then, is structural deterioration; namely the skeletal structure holding your panels in place. Put simply, when frames fail, the glass panels sag. Given enough time, this causes them to crack due to insufficient bracing. Panels may even fall out of place due to vibration or wind pressure.

Monitoring the condition of your panel ensures you notice small issues before they develop into larger problems. In turn, this makes your stained glass restoration simpler, less disruptive and more cost-effective. Our experts can advise you on the best solution for the stained glass in your property in Clapham, Lewisham or Tunbridge Wells.
